Government is Trying to be God. What Should We Do?

It’s quite simple, really.TITLE1

  • Our government has told God He’s not welcome in this country.
  • Bad behavior of American citizens is growing more and more outrageous.
  • Government’s response? Make more laws to govern morality.

And it doesn’t matter what side of the political spectrum you are, if you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, then that speaks of your stance on God’s Word.

So what should the response of the Church be? No different than Jesus’ response 2,000 years ago.

Truth is Our Foundation

Let’s recall who Jesus is:

  • Creator of the universe (Col. 1:16)
  • Messiah, the Chosen One (Mic. 5:1; Gen. 49:10; Zech. 9:9; Ps. 22; Dan. 9:24-27; Is. 52-53; Jn. 4:25-26)
  • Savior to the world (Jn. 3)
  • God (Jn. 8:58; Jn. 10:30)

But here’s the dealio: Jesus didn’t come to fix the political mess of Rome. (Many of the Jews thought the Messiah would save Israel from Roman rule.)

He didn’t come to solve financial problems.

He didn’t even come to make life easier for His people.

Jesus came to this world that He created for one reason: to obey the Father by being the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world.

This truth is foundational to every crisis every country faces. It’s foundational to economic success. It solves mankind’s financial issues (godly wisdom for finances is found in His Word).

More than this, the fact that Jesus is God and making Him preeminent in life would solve the moral failures of our country and the world.

But our country has made it clear: God is not welcome here.

The Result of Kicking Out God?

Since 1962, when prayer was removed from schools, the following skyrocketed:

  • teen pregnancies
  • suicide
  • sexually transmitted diseases
  • illegal drug use
  • poor academic scores

Check this out, cited from Free2Pray.info (http://www.free2pray.info/4impactofcourtdecisions.html)

Government Records show the top 7 leading problems in our schools ranked in order from first to seventh, 1940 and 1990. Notice the differences in type and seriousness.
      1940        1990
  1. Talking out of turn 1. Drug abuse
  2. Chewing Gum              2. Alcohol abuse
  3. Making noise 3. Pregnancy
  4. Running in the Halls 4. Suicide
  5. Cutting in Line 5. Rape
  6. Dress-code violations 6. Robbery
  7. Littering 7. Assault

So the government’s answer to these problems is to continue to do the same thing: make more laws. It’s insanity at it’s worst. Government seeks to take God’s place when it pushes Him out and replaces with its own laws to govern morality.

So Our Response?

Evangelism. I know…sounds trite. But if we, Christians, believe that Jesus came to save the world from sin…

If we believe His wisdom, alone, is superior to man’s wisdom…

If we believe that His power is unfathomable…

If we believe that His love is perfect…

If we really believe in God, then our efforts at fixing the symptoms of the world’s sickness should be redirected at fixing the world’s main problem: life without Jesus.

Yet evangelism has, sadly, become among the lowest of priorities for many churches in America. Fights have ensued over the issue of salvation, and have, thus, splintered the #1 command from Jesus to His Church: make disciples who make disciples. And we all know that in order to make a disciple, one must first hear the gospel and believe in Jesus.

So as dark and unruly as this world seems now, may we take heart that Jesus is still on His throne! And his #1 command has never decreased in priority. Let’s take his command to heart.

Evangelism. Share the gospel clearly. Effectively.

Learn how.

Teach others.

Move.
