Every Thought Captive: Change Your Life by Transforming Your Mind (Post #4)
Changing thoughts is hard. Like many other things, we develop habits regarding the way we think.
And as they say, old habits are hard to break. But not impossible.
Here are a few habitual thoughts many find it difficult to change:
- I must do whatever I can to gain the approval of people close to me.
- I need to keep this wall up on front of me–must never let anyone get to close, or they’ll hate me.
- The more people know of my accomplishments, the more adequate I’ll feel about myself.
Somewhere deep in the corridors of our minds these are the common thoughts of many people. We tell ourselves these things trying to feel more secure, significant, and adequate.
But These Never Satisfy.
And they can be difficult to replace–but they must be replaced. The question is, “How?”
The truth is that these are sinful thoughts stemming from the pride within each of us. We were created to have these feelings met (security, significance, and adequacy), but they can only be met completely by Christ.
When we seek to have these met by any other object or person other than Christ, it won’t work. Seeking to fulfill a legitimate need in an illegitimate way is called sin.
I’m convinced there is a foundational thought we, as Christians, can and must have in order to have a life of transformation. That thought is on the power of Jesus Christ.
Take a good look at this passage from Revelation 1 below:
12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands,13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. When John was on the Isle of Patmos, Jesus appeared in a vision in all His glory. He is the Son of Man, the Creator and Lover of our souls, the Beginning and the End, and the Ancient of Days.
Jesus gives us the right and the power to take every thought captive. With His Spirit dwelling in you, you can transform your mind to change your life. Jesus wants you to replace your negative and prideful thoughts with the pure and powerful thoughts that are only found in His pure and powerful Word.
Ask Him for help. He’s right here with you now.
