3 Life-or-Death Reasons Why You Need a Paul and Timothy

Rocky had Mickey.

Karate Kid had Mr. Miyagi.

Michael Jordan had Phil Jackson.

…and Timothy had Paul.

Yup. I’m talking about a coach. A mentor.

Someone who pours his/her life into someone else for the purpose of producing quality, integrity, spirit, perseverance, and a drive to accomplish that which one has set out to accomplish.

The Apostle Paul’s comments to Timothy are filled with inspiration to continue on in the journey of faith.

Like this:

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Tim. 1:6-7 NKJV)

I can’t count how many times I’ve heard a grown man state that he wished he had someone to teach him the common things of life when he was young.

Or a woman who is successful, adventurous, consistent, and wise tell me that the reason she is where she is in life is because of someone who mentored her through the years.

So what about you?

Do you/Have you ever had a Paul in your life? And a Timothy?

I’m convinced there are at least 3 vital reasons why every believer in Jesus must experience the joy of having a Paul and being a Paul to someone else. In fact, I believe it is a life-or-death issue. Here’s why:

  • The spreading of the gospel depends on it! You read that right. My good friend and drummer for our band, Noonday, is Bill Morgan. He’s a pilot by trade. And he has taught many how to fly a plane. It’s pretty simple: the trainee watches him fly, the trainee flies with him, and then the trainee goes solo. This is how people should learn to evangelize! Be a Timothy and watch someone share the gospel. Be a Paul and show someone how it’s done.
  • Mentoring brings out the life in you! When you selflessly pour your energy, experience, and enthusiasm into someone else, you are the one who lives life to the fullest. Many times, the hardest things we do in life are the most rewarding. And since this involves bringing a real, live person up to reach his/her potential in life, you are most blessed!
  • Mentoring can save a physical life. Here’s what James wrote in 5:19-20–Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. That’s a huge part of mentoring. I really believe this word for “soul” means a physical life in this book. I’ve ready dozens of stories and heard many testimonies of people who would be dead were it not for someone who loved them enough to intervene.

Who has been your Paul? Are you a Paul to someone?

Let’s hear from you. Give feedback of your story of someone who mentored you. Tell us how you are able to mentor someone else.

Perhaps you need a Paul in your life now. Let’s talk about it, so we can pray for you!

Your story will inspire others to do the same!
